The sunscreens at your pharmacy at not proven to be healthy! They include chemicals such as oxybenzone (linked to hormone disruption, allergic reactions, and reef damage), avobenzone (absorbed systemically into bloodstream), octinoxate (linked to hormone disruption), homosalate (linked to hormone disruption), octisalate (skin irritation and systemically absorbed into bloostream), octocrylene (degrades into a potential carcinogen).
All sunscreens that are not pure-mineral sunscreens are absorbed into the blood and we simply do not know they are safe. Pop Zinc does not absorb into your bloodstream.
Recently, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study that was conducted by the FDA to evaluate these systemically absorbed chemicals that are used in most sunscreens on the market. The study examined avobenzene, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule in healthy participants. Systemic absorption was observed for all these ingredients, with blood plasma levels exceeding 0.5 ng/ml (the FDA’s threshold for requiring further safety evaluation). Unfortunately, these still remain on the market, despite these concerns.
As a pharmacist and founder of Pop Zinc, I was troubled to learn that there were no acceptable pure mineral sunscreens on the market that offer clear application and an acceptable user experience. Why is Pop Zinc SPF25 the perfect sunscreen?

We wanted to create something different- something that actually works in the real world. The SPF rating means that if it takes you 10 minutes to burn in the sun, a SPF25 rating will protect you for 25x longer (250 minutes, or ~4 hours). But it’s not that simple, because our skin sweats off sunscreen in the heat. That means that even if you have an SPF50 or higher rating, it’s still recommended to re-apply every few hours. A higher SPF rated pure-mineral sunscreen would not apply clear, would need rubbing in, and would not be able to be easily re-applied throughout the day. We wanted to make something that was easy to re-apply while being a safe, pure mineral sunscreen. A sunscreen that would apply clear and could be used on the body and face easily throughout the day (even over makeup).
